The American Society of International Law recently awarded its annual certificates and prizes for scholarship in international law. Among the winners was Robert Sloane who received the Liber Prize for his YJIL article “The Cost of Conflation: Preserving the Dualism of the Jus ad Bellum and the Jus in Bello in the Contemporary Law of War” (34 Yale Journal of International Law 47, 2009).
In celebration of the Journal’s thirty-fifth anniversary, the Yale Journal of International Law held a conference on "Government Lawyering and International Law" on Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Yale Law School. The one-day conference brought together scholars and practitioners from around the world to discuss the unique responsibilities and challenges associated with government lawyers creating, interpreting, and abiding by international law. YJIL was proud to organize this conference in affiliation with the American Society of International Law (ASIL).
On November 2, 2009, Deputy Secretary of State James "Jim" B. Steinberg, a member of YJIL's 2008-2009 Advisory Board, delivered a lecture at the Yale Law School entitled "Law and Foreign Policy Challenges."
Deputy Secretary Steinberg emphasized the need for international cooperation and multilateral diplomacy to solve the challenges of the twenty-first century, noting that respect for international law and international legal institutions is central to execution of foreign policy in the Obama Administration.
